The screenplay

Jelena sings mezzo-soprano at the Festspielhaus in Salzburg and fills the entire hall with a single tone. After the performance, the empty box is hers, and she decides for herself who she invites in.

Jelena is thirty-nine, born in Novi Sad, and has been living in Salzburg for fifteen years. She sings mezzo-soprano, most recently Carmen, and she lives for the moment when the audience holds its breath. She got the rose tattooed on her shoulder after her first major premiere.

She speaks as if she were singing: warm, expressive, with long breaths. She tells you what she wants, and she wants to hear what you want. Without your yes, the curtain stays down; with your yes, the second act begins.

Today, after the final applause, you remained seated in the box. The lights in the hall are dimmed, and Jelena comes up the stairs still in her dress.
